workers are protected from working long or unsociable
hours by law. Here you can find out the minimum wage for different
age groups and the hours young people can work:
National Minimum Wage:
- 16 - 17 inclusive 3.40 per hour (From 1 October 2008 this
will increase to £3.53)
- 18 - 21 inclusive £4.60 per hour (From 1 October 2008 this will
increase to £4.77)
- 22 years and over £5.52 per hour (From 1 October 2008 this will
increase to £5.73)
Work Time Regulations
Young people that have left school but are under 18 are limited
to working:
- 40 hours per week
- 8 hours in one day
- night working prohibited from 10pm - 6am or 11pm - 7am
