Employment rights – salary and working hours

 workers are protected from working long or unsociable hours by law. Here you can find out the minimum wage for different age groups and the hours young people can work:

National Minimum Wage:

  • 16 - 17 inclusive 3.40 per hour (From 1 October 2008 this will increase to £3.53)
  • 18 - 21 inclusive £4.60 per hour (From 1 October 2008 this will increase to £4.77)
  • 22 years and over £5.52 per hour (From 1 October 2008 this will increase to £5.73)

Work Time Regulations

Young people that have left school but are under 18 are limited to working:

  • 40 hours per week
  • 8 hours in one day
  • night working prohibited from 10pm - 6am or 11pm - 7am
