Other ways of applying

By Application Form

At some time you will be asked to complete an application form.

  • photocopy the form before you fill it in and practise before having a go at the real thing
  • read the form and follow the instructions carefully
  • answer all the questions and write "none" or "not applicable" when you need to
  • make sure your writing is as clear as possible - your form must look neat
  • use black ink, as this will show up better if the form needs to be photocopied
  • check for accuracy, especially the spelling
  • send a short covering letter with the form
  • take a copy of the form for reference and read it through before your interview
  • if you need to say why you are suitable, make sure you read the details carefully and match what you write to what is required.

By Telephone

Using your phone with friends is easy and fun, but when you have to use it formally it can be quite daunting.

  • decide who you want to speak to and if you do not have a name, ask for the Human Resources Department or Course Enquiries at a college
  • write down what you are going to say. It 's easy to forget something if you only have a list in your head
  • be ready for any questions that you might be asked
  • try to call from a quiet area
  • if using a mobile phone, make sure it is fully charged
  • for a public phone make sure you have enough change or credit on your phone card
  • have a pen and paper ready so that you can take notes
  • speak clearly, be polite and enthusiastic. A good trick is to smile while you are talking - it will make you sound friendly
  • finish the conversation by thanking the person for taking the time to speak to you

By email and Internet

If you have the option to apply electronically, sending your CV and letter of application by email is a good way to show your computer skills.

Some employers advertise vacancies on their websites and invite direct applications using a form that can be completed on screen and transmitted electronically.

  • don't attempt to complete an online form online!
  • copy and paste it into a word processing package so that you can work on it
  • when you are happy with it, complete and submit it
