Interviews - hints and tips

Interviews for jobs and courses are a necessary part of life. There are some people who enjoy being interviewed and seem to have a natural talent for it but most people find it nerve-racking.

These hints and tips can help take some of the fear factor away and help your personality shine through.

Before the day
  • make sure you know where you're going and plan how to get there so that you'll be in good time
  • find out as much as you can about the job or course, company or college so that you can ask the right questions at interview
  • first impressions count, so make sure you dress smartly
  • think of some questions to ask at the interview, write them down and take them with you
  • ask someone to give you a practice interview.

On the day
  • give yourself plenty of time to get ready and to make sure that you arrive in good time
  • always make sure someone else knows where you are going, who you intend to see and when you are due back
  • make sure that you have everything you need (e.g., directions, Progress File)
  • go to Reception first and explain why you are there and who your interview is with
  • remember - the interviewers want to see some personality so be yourself as much as your nerves allow

What they may ask you
  • Why do you want to do this particular job/training/course?
  • How are you suited to this job/training/course?
  • What do you know about this college/school/company?
  • What do you do in your spare time?
  • Tell me something about yourself
  • Do you have any questions?

What you could ask them
  • How are new employees introduced to the organisation
  • What results have past students achieved on this course?
  • What did last year's students go on to do?
  • What are the hours?
  • What qualifications will I get at the end of the training?
  • When will I know the result of this interview?

At the Interview
  • if you're going into an office for your interview, knock first and then walk in
  • smile as you go in and say "Good morning" or "Good afternoon"
  • be polite, speak clearly and try to give full answers - not just "Yes" or "No"
  • be positive, talk about what you are good at - your strengths, abilities and interests
  • remember to ask the questions that you have prepared
  • if you are at a job or training interview, you can ask what you will be paid or what training allowance you will get, but don't make this your first question!
  • thank the interviewer when you leave
