Work and training

Some young people decide to take a job with training. Is it for you? Are you thinking …

  • I prefer to do more practical learning
  • I know what I want to do and can start straight away
  • I want to earn while I learn
  • I have found out that training on the job is a good way of getting started in my chosen career

Is getting training important?

Yes very few young people now take a job without training. Employers want skilled and qualified workers and there are fewer and fewer unskilled jobs available. What this means is that, if you get a job without training you may find you struggle to get promotion or to move on to a better job with another company.

What qualifications can I get?

You should aim to get a nationally recognised qualification such as an NVQ and try to progress as much as you can. The better qualified you are, the better your job prospects.

What options are available to me?

  • Advanced Apprenticeships leading to NVQ Apprenticeships leading to NVQ Level 2
  • Jobs with in-house company training or part-time study leading to NVQ Level 1, 2, 3, 4 or equivalent
  • Running your own business .
