Time Out ... Year Off ... Gap Year
Many young people decide to have a year out after school or
college and before starting higher education or their careers.
- Pros
gain maturity and confidence
time to clarify or confirm career ideas
save money - useful if you're going on to higher education
the chance to travel
- Cons
might lose the discipline of study
a break may be seen as lack of motivation
some year out activities such as expeditions can be expensive
A year out gives you the chance to have a break from full-time
education and if you are uncertain about your future plans may give
you more time to decide what to do. As long as you use the time
constructively universities, colleges and employers generally look
favourably on people who have had a year out. For some courses such
as agriculture, a year’s relevant work experience is essential.
